World Music @ Montagu Museum

Sunday, 25 June 2017
In another coup for local music lovers, Dassierock, with the generous support of Concerts SA, has convinced Pops Mohamed & Dave Reynolds to bring their special brand of world music to Montagu when they perform at the Montagu Museum on Sunday afternoon June 25 at 16h00.

This innovative duo has done over 150 concerts together, playing major festivals, and jazz clubs alike. Pops Mohamed is South Africa’s leading "indigenous-contemporary-crossover" artist. A multi-instrumentalist, he plays kora (21 string African harp), mbira (thumb piano), Khoisan mouth-bow, and percussion. He has received two Lifetime Achievement Awards, recorded and made movies with Khoisan groups in the Kalahari, and toured internationally with the likes of Andreas Vollenweider, Baaba Maal and others.

Dave Reynolds is SA’s leading steelpan player, a SAMRO Award winning composer as well as an acoustic guitarist, who favours his 10-string classical guitar. He has performed and recorded all over the world, including with Hugh Masekela, Andy Narell, Paul Hanmer, the late Gito Baloi of Tananas, the late Sipho Gumede and McCoy Mrubata. His latest solo album "The Light of Day" was nominated for a SAMA Award for "Best Instrumental album".

For this concert they will be joined on bass by well-known Cape Town musician Shaun Johannes, who regularly performs with a number of SA's top musicians (including on occasion the Montagu resident Jannie Hanepoot's Big Band!) in between lecturing bass guitar at UCT and running his own recording studio.

Pops & Dave's shows get regular rave reviews in the press, for instance Jazz Life Magazine who said "Nothing short of innovative, groundbreaking and explosive". Here is a recent video of Pops & Dave performing at the Orbit jazz club in Johannesburg:

The show at Montagu Museum will start at 16h00, and entrance is R100 for adults (which includes a free glass of muscadel) and R20 for children. Tickets are available at Montagu Museum during business hours. There will also be a workshop in Railton, Swellendam on Saturday afternoon 24 June, as well as a concert in Suurbraak at the VGK hall Saturday evening. For more info email
