On Sunday 15th at 4pm we have Hammerstein and Kern’s musical SHOW BOAT (2h24mins).
A true classic of American musical theatre, this tale of the lives of the performers, stagehands and dock workers on the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River show boat, over 40 years from 1887 to 1927.It is both a poignant love story and a powerful reminder of the bitter legacy of racism and features such songbook classics as "Ol' Man River" and "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man"- a stylish, exuberant production from the San Francisco Opera. With Heidi Stober as Magnolia Hawks, Ellie Mae Chipley as Kirsten Wyatt, Frank Schultz as John Bolton and Steve Baker in the role of Patrick Cummings. The roles of Cap'n Andy and his wife Parthy are taken by Emmy winner Bill Irwin and Harriet Harris.
The musical was first produced in 1927 by Florenz Ziegfeld. The premiere of Show Boat on Broadway was an important event in the history of American musical theatre. It "was a radical departure in musical storytelling, marrying spectacle with seriousness", compared with the trivial and unrealistic operettas, light musical comedies and "Follies"-type musical revues that defined Broadway in the 1890s and early 20th century.
‘’ Fantastic revival of Kerns masterpiece. Beautifully presented, with magnificent sets, and costumes. Expertly lit with creativity in abundance. Large chorus and orchestra, make the show a delight to watch. All the leads are excellent. A delight and recommended to all lovers of musicals.’’
‘’ This is ana amazing production of one of the best of American musicals and it is really inspiring to have it performed by such a high quality company of orchestra and singers. I can recommend it to anyone who has an interest in opera or musicals.’’ Amazon.co.uk reviewers
