The Italian Job at Wahnfried

Montagu Events - The Italian Job at Wahnfried
At Wahnfried

On Friday 11th at 5pm we have our third Michal Caine film, THE ITALIAN JOB (1h35mins). In addition to Caine, the film's cast also included Benny Hill and Noël Coward; the film was Coward's last before his retirement from acting.

The film proved a success upon its release, earning critical acclaim amongst critics for the performances by Caine and Coward, the film's reflection of British culture from the period, and the film's climactic car chase. The Italian Job became a cult symbol of British filmography and was ranked favourably in the top 100 British films by the British Film Institute. Several elements from the film became symbolic cult features, including the film's cliffhanger ending, and Caine's infamous line from the film.

Charlie has just left prison, and now wants to do a "big job". The job is to steal four million dollars worth of gold arriving in Italy from China. Charlie's job needs financing, so he goes to Mr. Bridger (a Mafia-type boss) who is in prison (Charlie has to break in). In Italy, a clever plan is used to distract the authorities, while the raiders make their get-away in three Minis. This leads to a car chase sequence through Italian streets, buildings, rivers, sewers, highways, and rooftops, which lasts for several minutes.

‘’I enjoyed The Italian Job, it is entertaining with a great cast, fabulous locations and a brilliant soundtrack. The secondary characters could have been developed much more though, and the direction was a little too flashy. That said, a vast majority of the dialogue is above decent, there are occasions where it could have been better, but it is good enough. It is well paced though, and the cinematography, scenery, set pieces and costumes are fabulous, Turin looks glamorous and the interiors from Twickenham Studios are stunning. Quincy Jones's soundtrack is brilliant, and the cast is first rate, with Michael Caine suave and charismatic, Noel Coward marvellous and Benny Hill great value.’’ IMDb reviewer
