Talk by Geologist Nick Norman

18 Jan 2018 - 19 Jan 2018
Geological Hike/Trail & Talk by well-known South African Geologist, Nick Norman, author of, i.a.: ‘Geology off the beaten track .. exploring South Africa’s hidden treasures’

Nick Norman has kindly agreed to visit Montagu on 18-19 January 2018 and to undertake a geological hike/trail with members and friends of the Montagu Eco Club. This renowned geologist is not the normal type of invited guest that the MEC brings to Montagu and, based upon previous contact with Nick, his undertaking on the above date should certainly interest those of us who yearn to learn more about our mountains and how they actually comprise and represent one of the most widely divergent spectrums of ‘well-exposed geology from ancient to modern’ in the whole South African context. ‘….. the folding - around Montagu, in particular – is a delight to behold.’ Many of us find the local wide variety of rock formations most enthralling and appealing, but do we really know very much about these formations? ‘One of the most important geological faults in the country, known as the Worcester Fault, has moved the blocks on either side of it a substantial distance vertically.’ The Worcester Fault is undoubtedly an attraction in the Montagu region and we are sure that our guest will be more than pleased to devote some time to identifying its characteristics.

Members and friends of the MEC are therefore invited to come and meet Nick Norman and to accompany him in the Montagu region to learn more about the ‘construction’ of our environment and exactly what it actually comprises.

To facilitate the planning and organisation of the particular visit and everything that it is hoped to be able to cover during the period of Nick’s very short stay in Montagu, it would be appreciated if you could kindly contact the Tourism Office (023-614 2471) as soon as possible to inform Anne-Marie of your intention to attend and to participate in the particular hike/trail during Nick’s visit.

Apart from having to look after one’s own transportation and refreshments during the hike/trail, and contributing the grand sum of R 20 pp to the Montagu Eco Club for participation, further specific details in regard to meeting Nick, times and places of departure and areas to be visited will be forthcoming once the overall programme has been finalised.

We trust that this particular undertaking of the Montagu Eco Club will play a meaningful role in promoting the many benefits that our Club offers its members and friends.

Kind regards
