Profile of an Artist. - Michael Vincent Bell.
I worked in a corporate environment where I used to administer deceased estates for 17 years. I would never have thought that the creative side would come to the fore. Admitting that I am an artist was a challenge.
I left Cape Town and came to stay with my parents in the most beautiful picturesque and popular town, Montagu. It did not take me long to make friends with the local community, who went out of their way to help and develop my newly acquired interest. I joined the Montagu Art Association and participated in many art exhibitions in town. I also joined the Art Association in Stellenbosch for a number of years.
My parents, Tommy and Anna Bell who resides in Montagu, supported me in this new found venture and their faith and belief in me made it a reality. I remember the day my mother came home from the library, saying that she entered me to attend an art class presented by Irena Coetzee from Bonnievale. Her paintings and professional approach and love for art took me on a road to self-discovery.
At that stage I was using the smallest of brushes I could find and painted a profile of a leopard The white round eyes became almost alive and seem to follow my every move. My sister Helen, even offered to assist me with the painting At last I could finish the painting successfully. They eyes were sad, but soulful and my dad loved the painting which he bought from me to as gift to my sister, Annaleen.
My next teacher was Braam Coetzee, from Robertson, who has taken time to develop my talent. He changed the small brush habit to a larger one and taught me to look at composition, color and contrast but not to lose the artistic feel to achieve my goal. My landscape paintings are done in acrylic, oil or mixed media. My other interest started with the Solani project where I went to help the underprivileged and where I got introduced to mosaic as a craft. It took endless hours to create and I started my own small mosaic mirror range and various other crafts as cheeseboard with mosaic edges, keyrings to name only a few. These art and crafts can be viewed at Rambling Rose, Montagu Museum and Burgundy Gherkin in Montagu.
The third interest developed through time as the owner of a horse farm needed a person to look after his three boerbulls. They appointed me and gave me the freedom to create and develop my artistic profession even further and allowed me to attend art classes. The farm is about 28km from Robertson and the house is settled in the beautiful picturesque setting of Eilandia area next to Bon Cap and the Breede river. A packet of Zinnia seeds started the process of gardening. Then followed by vegetables, which are now sold at Farmer's market in Robertson and Montagu Park Market.
To be involved to all three components are a challenge and the days are too short to fit in all my activities. I will hold a solo exhibition, including paintings and mosaics at the Hick's Art Gallery, 9 Joubert Street, Montagu from 23rd till 28th of March 2019.A number of artists will be invited to enlighten the exhibition. Entry will be free of charge. You are most welcome to this exhibition and share the love of art with me.
