More about Ethan

Ethan was selected to be part of our National Squad that will be taking part in the 7th Goju Kai World Championships in Vancouver, Canada in the Richmond Oval stadium which was built for the Winter Olympics from 28th Sept to 1st Oct.South Africa has taken home the title of World Champions for the last 2 World Champs so are working very hard to retain the cup for the 3rd consecutive time which would make South Africa World Champs for 12 years.

Since being selected he has given up every Saturday that he can and has had a stall at the Montagu Village market selling homemade lemonade, fresh vegetable juices etc. and has already raised R25000.

He was also chosen as the Breederiver Gazette and Supersport “Let’s play’ winner and Sportsman of the year 2017. He was interviewed and aired on Supersport.
He was chosen not only for his achievements in Karate but more that he doesn’t overtrain and still gets to have fun and be a boy.
He leads a very balanced lifestyle and does Ballroom and latin dancing, guitar, art, running, cycling, soccer, cricket and all school sports. He only trains for almost 4 hours a week for karate which is not a lot.

What is really amazing about him is what lead him to Karate. When we moved to Montagu, Ethan was a very sickly child and ended up with pneumonia numerous times. He was a tiny little boy and due to that he was bullied for 2 years. We sent him to Karate at the age of 5 and slowly he learnt to believe in himself and that his size was actually an advantage. Sensei Nico used to call him ‘the assassin’ as the kids would underestimate him just due to his size.

At the age of 7, he outgrew his asthma. He has never used force against any child yet but the way he conducted himself changed dramatically and he has never had bullying again since starting school. He has learnt self-discipline, self-respect and endurance.
He is still small but has proved that dynamite does indeed come in small packages.
