Montagu at night has always enchanted me. I love dark as much as I love light and the insiduous creep of nighttime light pollution beyond cities and into the Karoo is to me a real loss. Our skies are simply not as rich, the Milky Way no longer so radiant, as it was when I was a child.
But this town nevertheless still beguiles at night. The old buildings have all the best qualities of folk art, made by local people using mainly materials found locally. Their beauty lies in simplicity and function with added embellishment kept to the minimum. These little human flourishes pull at my heart.
Late at night and early, before dawn, the streets are silent and empty apart from cats and other creatures of the night. I become like them, moving quietly and watchfully, carrying within a strange mix of melancholy and a longing for something I cannot quite define. I am glad to be here.
