Music Society Sunset Concert

The next Montagu Music Society Sunset Concert on Saturday 25 February will feature the UCT Percussion Trio at the Montagu Nature Garden, van Riebeeck Street, Montagu South at 5.00 pm for 5.30 pm. Bring your picnic. Chairs will be available. Tickets R90 for adults.

The UCT Percussion Trio reflects the diversity of South African society: Daniel Nambassi (2nd Year BMus Western Classical Percussion), is of East African heritage; Lilavan Gangen (2nd Year BMus Jazz Performance), of South Indian descent; and Ethan Rutter (PDM Orchestral Percussion), of European and Southern African San descent.

As an offshoot of the UCT Percussion ensemble program, the trio performs an eclectic mix of 20th century repertoire, from contemporary marimba works to minimalist Steve Reich-style drumming. Coached by Mr. Frank Mallows: South African Percussionist and Head of Percussion and Drumset Studies at the South African College of Music, previously Principal of the Beau Soleil Music Centre. Daniel Nambassi - Former Head Boy of the Drakenberg Boys' Choir; current member of acclaimed a cappella ensemble AnecNote; holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology & Politics, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

Lilavan Gangen - Educated at Rondebosch Boys' Schools; former member of the Tygerberg Children's Choir and South African Youth Choir; influential musician in the Indian community; and freelance drummer in the Cape Town jazz scene Ethan Rutter - Educated at Plumstead High School; started his percussion playing in the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra; performs regularly with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and Stellenbosch City Orchestra as a freelance percussionist; current member of the Cape Garisson Artillery Pipe Band.

Recent performances of the UCT Percussion Ensemble: St George's Cathedral, Cape Town; Beau Soleil Music Centre, Percussion Concert Series; South African College of Music, Performance Class Series. The ensemble has performed works by South African composers Peter Klatzow, Christopher Coburn, Allan Stephenson. In this performance, the trio has incorporated instrumentation native to their own heritage.
