On Sunday 14th at 4pm we have a South African version of Bizet’s opera U-CARMEN eKHAYELITSHA (2HRS). In Xhosa with English subtitles.
The film won critical acclaim when it received the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
The energy, compassion, and heat of township life in all its elements create a constantly visually interesting and dynamic background for the unfolding of the story, which owes part of its huge popularity to the thrilling combination of a violent gangster tale with a passionate, almost supernatural love story. As it unfolds, it explores issues of fame and wealth, the position of a strong and independently minded woman in a very masculine society and, perhaps most importantly, the incomprehensible attraction between abuser and victim. It a bawdy, passionate, and vibrant tale with enormous warmth and heat, and some of the greatest tunes ever written. The fantastic vitality and huge skill of the performers from Dimpho Di Kopane make an impact beyond that achieved by any filmed opera to date. The soundtrack, recorded by Dimpho Di Kopane with Imbumba, a young South African orchestra, combines Bizet's score with traditional South African music, which creates a powerful musical experience.
‘’This movie may be one of the greatest musicals ever produced in cinematic history. Every facet of this movie is superb: the acting, the story, the music, the dancing, the singing, everything. Not only does this movie faithfully tell the story of Carmen, it does so in Xhosa, making the production even more impressive, appealing and effective. The lead players's performances are worthy of the highest accolades, especially the of Pauline Malefane who plays Carmen and Andile Tshoni who plays her lover, Jongi. Their astounding, stunning, stupendous performances carry the movie. Ms. Malefane is one of the great lead actresses and an incredible singer. Further, the movie itself is packed with action and drama, all of which is set in a South African township which adds immeasurably to the movie's strength. The story of Carmen is timeless and tragic, and this movie successfully captures the essence of the story, providing a version that is unsurpassed.’’ IMDb reviewer
