Montagu Easter Art
Montagu’s long and rich history of being a town for artists will be celebrated with an art meander event on Easter weekend.
Art is a solitary occupation and lockdown has been a period in which most artists have been more productive than usual. Montagu Easter Art will see Montagu’s artists show what they have been doing, when they open their studios and private galleries to the public on the Saturday and Sunday of Easter weekend, 3 and 4 April 2021. The local artists will be supported by the town’s commercial art galleries – Ibis Gallery and THE Gallery in Bath Street, Hicks Gallery in Joubert Street and also by exhibitions at the KWV Centre.
A highlight for art lovers in Montagu will be the reopening of the Krige House in Long Street. The house used to belong to Francois Krige, the world-renowned artist who lived in Montagu from 1967 until his death in 1994. The intention is to have the house open by Easter and to have an exhibition of Krige’s work as part of Montagu Easter Art.
More paintings by Krige can be seen at the KWV Centre.
A major drawcard will be that Philip Badenhorst, one of South Africa’s most celebrated living artists, will be exhibiting at the KWV Gallery.
Local artists who have confirmed their participation include Riëtte Steenkamp and Laura Liebenberg in Krom Street, Hanna Naudé and Janine de Wet in Keerom Street, Jane Moodie at The Vault in Bath Street, Ivan Nilsson in Long Street, stained glass artist Guy Longmore in Montagu Village and Paul Whitehead in Long Street, to mention just a few of the participants. Whitehead will not only display his work but will also explain and demonstrate his reduction lino technique.
An exciting feature of the event is that Laura Liebenberg will have the well-known and established sculptor and collage artist Marinda du Toit as guest exhibitor.
While the different artists will all be exhibiting at their own venues, The Vault in Bath Street (in the old Standard Bank building) will be the hub of the event, where most participating artists will exhibit examples of their work and where visitors can get information and maps to guide them through the meander.
