Historical Society Event

Wednesday, 02 November 2016
Montagu Historical Society
As a first event or ‘action’ for the recently established ‘Montagu Historical Society’ is was decided by die Organizing Committee of the society to join forces with the local MOTH organization.
The month of November is annually commemorated as the month in which The Great War came to an end in 1918. This year 2016, qualifies even more so, for it is not only the centenary of this terrible war, but also recognizes the role the South African forces played during the Battle for Delville Wood in July 2016.

As a first event for the Montagu Historical Society, Chairperson Emile Badenhorst will be giving a talk on the evening on a book he wrote and which was launched during 2015, “Pushing up Daisies; The Great War Letters of Cpl. Gordon Smith of the First South African Infantry Brigade”.
Most of the South Africans first join the Botha Army with the invasion of German South West Africa in 1915, before moving on to the European platform of the war.
Smith survived the war, but not before getting injured on a number of occasions and being taken Prisoner-of-War during the final German Offensive. Fortunately, a collection of letters he wrote to his family in South Africa during the four year period gives one a honest and first-hand account of the horrific experiences these young men from all over the world had to endure in order to keep a handful of superpowers in control of the global economy.

The venue for the evening will be the normal meeting place of the MOTH in Montagu, Staaldak Shellhole at the premises of Wessel Fourie Transport in the Industrial Area,

DATE: Wednesday 2 November 2016.
Time - 18h30 for 19h00.

The meeting will be followed directly by the Gordon Smith presentation. Visitors are more than welcome.
