"Bicycle Thieves" is a neorealist film directed by Vittorio De Sica and released in 1948. The film is set in post-World War II Rome and follows a working-class man named Antonio Ricci, who finally lands a job as a poster-hanger but discovers that he needs a bicycle for the job. Antonio and his wife Maria sell their bedsheets to buy a bicycle, but on his first day at work, the bicycle is stolen. Antonio and his young son Bruno then embark on a desperate search through the streets of Rome to find the bicycle.
The film is notable for its use of non-professional actors, including Lamberto Maggiorani, who played Antonio, and Enzo Staiola, who played his son Bruno. The film also features a realistic portrayal of post-war Italy and the struggles of the working class to make ends meet. The film's themes of poverty, desperation, and the breakdown of family values made it a landmark in neorealist cinema.
"Bicycle Thieves" is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made and has influenced many filmmakers over the years. It has been praised for its raw, emotional power and its ability to capture the essence of life in post-war Italy. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1949 and has since been included in numerous lists of the greatest films ever made.
