Brought to Montagu by Dassierock Concerts:

Internationally renowned and SAMA award winning guitarist Derek Gripper, with the generous support of Concerts SA, will be performing a solo concert at the Montagu Museum on Saturday April 16 at 20h00.

VENUE: Montagu Museum

FREE Workshop - Saturday 16 April at 10am - 1pm at Nieuwe Horizon Community Hall, Ashbury
The workshop is for all levels of guitarist, including beginners. Bring your own guitar!

For the past decade and more Derek has enthralled audiences around the world with a repertoire that includes classical, African and contemporary guitar works. He has recorded several albums that include his own compositions, but his exploration of West-Africa's great kora virtuosos (kora is a 21-string harp) has created a new form of classical guitar music out of Africa’s richest musical traditions.

He released his ninth album, One Night on Earth: Music from the Strings of Mali, late in 2012. This album of kora interpretations astonished guitar maestro John Williams (himself described by historians as "perhaps the most technically accomplished guitarist the world has seen") into saying he thought it was "absolutely impossible until I saw Derek Gripper do it". When kora maestro Toumani Diabate heard these recordings he disbelievingly asked his producer to confirm that she had actually seen one person play this music on just one guitar.

Classical Guitar Magazine called Derek's 2011 SAMA-winning recording of original compositions "an excellent album...of hypnotic beauty" while Guitar International says of the same album that Derek's world class ability "is able to transcend the instrument itself."
