The Cape Town Chamber Choir, under the auspices of the Montagu Music Society, will
perform their programme ‘In Harmony/In Harmonie’ on Saturday 17 November at 18:00 at
the Old Mission Church in Long Street, Montagu.
The Cape Town Chamber Choir has been described as one of the foremost adult a cappella
choirs in the Cape. Its 30 members are all experienced choristers, many of whom sang in the
pre-eminent university choirs of the country, and come from the greater Cape Town area –
from Melkbos to Fish Hoek, from Somerset West to Sea Point. They are directed by Marijke
de Villiers Roos, music teacher at Bloemhof Hoër Meisieskool, who also conducts the
school’s Accelerando Choir.
The concert programme promises to take the audience through the ages and styles of
harmonious a cappella music - from the religious motets and indecorous madrigals of the
renaissance, through the rousing and emotional romantic voices of Mendelssohn and
Brahms, right to the youthful exuberance of the Glee Club!
According to Dirk Binneman, chairperson of the choir, the title ‘In Harmony/In Harmonie’
echoes the choir’s vision ‘Unity in Harmony’. Dirk goes on saying: ‘It refers to a cappella
singing, which is most probably the purest form of music making – it just the voice, no
accompaniment, no pretention, nowhere to hide! Just the perfect harmonious blending of
voices where each voice is equal and as important as those around it. But ‘harmony’ also
refers to the way we aspire to live – in peace, equality and in agreement with one another.
And our wish is that through our music making we can bring a little harmony!’
Tickets at R100 for adults and R20 for students are available at the door.
The Montagu Music Society invites you to a glass of wine before the concert. The concert is sponsored by
