And now, as they say in the best British comedy sketches, for something completely different: on Saturday 28 May, the Cape Town-based Lutesong ensemble will present “Alleluia! Amen”, a program that includes some of the smaller scale works by grand Baroque masters Bach, Handel and Schütz. There will also be works by their lesser-known contemporaries Hammerschmidt, Vallet, Viadana, Grandi and Kapsberger, that were intended for personal reflection. Themes of prophecy, salvation and worship are explored through sacred songs, monodies and arias, and accompanied by period instruments.
Montagu can look forward to a program of remarkable variety, expressively performed by three of Cape Town’s best-known specialists in the field of early music: Lente Louw (mezzo soprano), Uwe Grosser (lute, chitarrone) and Erik Dippenaar (chamber organ).
Tickets for this concert, at R 150 for adults and R20 for students, will be on sale at The Montagu Bookshop (023 614 2772) from Monday 9 May, and at the door of the Old Mission Church in Long Street from 17h30 on the day of the event. The concert starts at 17h30 for 18h00, and patrons are invited to enjoy a glass of warming Muscadel from 17h30 onwards.
Please also look out for notices of our fundraising efforts that will happen during June, July, and August. It is becoming almost prohibitively expensive to present concerts featuring artists of the calibre that we have come to expect in Montagu. We therefore urge our loyal audience members to attend the fundraising events that we are planning.
On the 1st of every month, we send out our "Events Mailer", highlighting all the events taking place in and around Montagu for that month. Be sure to subscribe not to miss out on important events.
