Montagu Cheese is a family run business specialising in hand made artisanal cheeses. Montagu Cheese was taken over by Denham Bowker in July 2012 after being established on a farm outside of Swellendam in 2000. The business now operates in the small town of Montagu in the Western Cape.
Montagu Cheese uses traditional Dutch cheese making techniques and recipes that have been passed down through the years. The cheese is of a high quality and much sort after in the areas in which we distribute. The cheese has no additives, flavourants or maturation agents and is suitable for vegetarians.
Our Range of Cheeses
Plaaskaas - Young, artisan estate cheese. It can be best described mild and creamy signature Dutch cheese. This washed cheese is our most popular as it is versatile and enjoyed by all.
In House Flavours - Our flavoured cheeses use our Plaaskaas as a base and are developed in-house using the best local ingredients available. These cheeses are mild and creamy with the full flavour of the specific spice or herb. The flavours are as follows:
• Basilicum - dried basil
• Spotted Black - crushed and whole black pepper corns
• Bieslook - fresh green chives
• Komijnkaas - whole cumin seeds
Wynland Cheddar - Matured artisanal estate cheddar (matured for 8-12 months). This is a hard cheese with full flavour and a traditional cheddar bite.
Montagu Mature - This Boerenkaas is an aged artisan estate cheese and is strong and vibrant. It has been matured for 18 months which gives a robust, mature and very unique flavour.
• For your convenience, our range of cheese is also available at WERNER'S MEATS in Bath Street and you can find us at the Montagu Market on Saturdays ! We also deliver free in Montagu once a week.
