Sheilam Cactus Garden and Succulent Nursery is situated on the R60 between Robertson and Ashton in the Klaasvoogds West area, a mere 90 minute drive from Cape Town.
Sheilam was established in 1954 and it is possibly the oldest garden of its kind in South Africa.
The garden and nursery boasts approximately 2000 different species of cacti, succulents and cycads and it has been recognized by plant botanists as one of the finest collections of specimen plants worldwide.
At Sheilam one can get a close-up view of the complete collection and marvel at all the different sizes, shapes and colours that these plants display. They vary from very tall to quite small and one can find a plant to suit any garden or even pots of all sizes.
Visitors to Sheilam are also introduced to the wonderful world of camouflage, self-defence mechanisms and survival strategies that these plants possess. Upon close inspection one will discover the most interesting textures and designs.
Sheilam supplies plants to wholesale and retail nurseries and also export plants and seed worldwide to countries such as Japan, Korea, China, Europe and USA.
Plants, seed and potting soil are also sold on the farm.
A visit to Sheilam is a must for both plant lovers and collectors of beautiful and extraordinary specimens.
Guided tours for large groups are offered by prior arrangement.
Visitors may bring a picnic basket and spend a few hours studying some of nature’s most interesting specimens eg Mother-law’s chair, Old man of the Andes, Elephant’s feet, Quiver trees and Bushman grapes.
