Novello Farm is home to a small herd of gentle Huacaya Alpacas. The farm started with just 3 Alpacas in 2004. The herd has grown over the years and the arrival of new babies (crias) brings much joy say the owners. "Now, we can’t imagine our lives without them, they are our lives and the sheer joy one gets from caring and knowing them is beyond imagination".
Since ancient times, the South American Andes Mountains have been the ancestral home to the prized alpaca. Together with their close relatives, the llamas, alpacas provided clothing, food, transport and fuel. Their fine fleece was cherished by members of the Incan civilization (referred to as "The Fibre of the Gods"), and was reserved for Incan royalty.
Novello Farm specializes in creating felted fabrics and felt products for scarves, shawls, jackets, throws, cushions, lampshades, wall panels and hangings. Felt is an intriguing process of transforming natural fleece into a unique fabric which has no warp and no weft like woven fabrics; does not fray, and is infinitely versatile. The products are unique items for the high-end fashion and interior design industries.
The team of spinners produce Alpaca yarns using traditional methods of cleaning and spinning. They are also involved in a teaching project to encourage and involve the local community to spin, hand knit and weave the yarns into top quality garments for that exquisite ‘wearing’ experience.
Visitors can enjoy the unique experience of life on an Alpaca stud farm, learn more about these beautiful creatures, see demonstrations of the processes of cleaning, spinning, weaving, felting and knitting the luxurious alpaca fibre and marvel at the variety of unique and luxurious products that are designed and produced from their fibres.
Novello Farm is situated on the R62 between Montagu and Barrydale.
