The Montagu Eco Club started out as an informal gathering of friends who would pick up litter and enjoying excursions in the Montagu district. Heinie Heidenrych, the founding member, made the decision to officially start an outdoor association and the first committee was elected in late 2000.

The Club has recently become a Friends Group with WESSA (Wild Life & Environment Society of South Africa)

After 10 years the club is still going strong with well over 100 members and still growing. The members continue with cleanup operations and hacks in the mountains. It acts as a ‘watch dog’, playing an advisory and participating role in any developments in the Breede River Winelands.

Excursions and educational events, such as slide presentations, speakers,etc. are regularly organised on a variety of wildlife and environmental topics.
