The Montagu Food Security Gardens produces quality vegetable produce for the general public and the disadvantaged in need of food.
Additionally we supply vegetable seedlings in the hundreds of thousands to various community programs across the Western Cape of South Africa. Principal sponsors of the program are the Rotary Club of the Breede River Winelands and the Distell Foundation.
Following a devastating flood we also received donations from the Montagu Saturday Morning Market and many local individuals. Formerly we were entirely self sustainable from sales of produce.
Seedlings are once more a thing of beauty and food security at Sonneblom. If you have a program or project requiring seedlings,
For large orders of 20k to 100k or more, notify us in the previous season and we'll grow them scheduled to your date of planting.
Day by day our produce is returning. One way to start producing your own food is to plant certain vegetables amongst flower beds. Varieties of coloured spinach, beet root, onions and carrots can all be grown amongst flower beds. Peas, which have lovely blossoms can be trellised on a house wall. You get to pick and eat them while weeding.
Our emphasis has always been: "What About The Children?". Without proper nourishment they whither. As the future of South Africa, I believe it is our duty and privilege to ensure where ever possible they don't go to bed or school, hungry.
Sonneblom's wish is to help develop and support food security, and not just for the disadvantaged. We encourage everyone with an interest to grow their own. With food prices likely to continue rocketing, in most of South Africa you can eat fresh produce straight from the ground, year round.
