Street party stops traffic | [back] |
by Ronel Preston 17/12/2009 What an unusual sight it was and what a special party it turned out to be for our senior citizens. It is not every day that one sees one of our busier streets closed off for a luncheon table - right in the middle of the street - set for a 150 people!
This unique and very special event took place on the 16th December in front of Huis Uitvlucht in Piet Retief Street. It was the brainchild of Suria Meyer, one of our caring (and always friendly!) SA Police Service members.
When asked how it came about, Suria said: "It had long been a dream of mine to organise something special for the elderly and the less fortunate among us who very likely will not have the comfort of friends and family around them over the Festive Season. The execution of the idea happened so spontaneously and with so much enthusiasm and support from many in our community, that before I knew it, a whole group of us got together at a meeting and my dream became a reality!"
Gathering from the lively chatter, the occasion was hugely enjoyed by all who attended.
