by Sarah Ford, SPCA 09/11/2009 "Yes, we can"!
These three words, borrowed from that country over the water, have become a rallying cry for many and aptly describe the work of Winelands SPCA during 2009. Faced with rising prices, job losses and an ever increasing workload, this has been a very difficult and daunting year, especially for charities.
Nevertheless, our community has continued to support the SPCA with donations, large and small. Many have stepped up and added a new four legged family member to their household. The committee and volunteers have put in many hours to help keep things running smoothly and the staff, the society's most valuable asset, continues to give selflessly.
Of importance this year was the SPCA's participation in the Humane Society of the United States International Spay Day and our appointment as World Animal Day ambassadors. The Municipality has given financial support and, most encouraging of all, two grants were received from the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund – R100,000 in March for work in farming areas and R181,600 in October for work in urban areas.
So, as the end of the year draws near, it is time to say thank you to everyone who has assisted the SPCA, from large donors to those who put their small change in our collection tins, from the volunteers who exercise the dogs in all weathers, to those who do jobs from home to assist the SPCA. Every bit of support is vital and truly appreciated.
Can we do it again next year? For the sake of those who have no voice of their own, yes we can and yes we must.
As can be seen from the picture below, not only the hardworking SPCA staff, but our needy animals also, are extremely grateful for any donations received and count their blessings every day!
