by Ronel Preston 15/06/2010 "We had the coldest daytime temperature since 2001 yesterday", 14th June, says Allen Castley who diligently keeps record of the rainfall measured as well as each day's temperatures for us. Although the temperature went up to 9 degrees C at one stage yesterday, the average recorded was 6 degrees C for the most part of the day, dropping to 1 degree C during the night. This time last year we seemed to average around 11 degrees which, for us, is still cold!
The last 3 days measured 50 mm of rain - with 43mm of that recorded for yesterday alone! It certainly felt eerily like "flood potential" at one stage ....
Small wonder then that when we got up this morning we found our mountaintops covered in snow. No matter where in Montagu you live you could enjoy the sight. Many Montaguers took to the Koo where, if the snow is quite thick on even the lowest mountain peaks around the town, it usually guarantees that large parts of the landscape in the Keisie and the Koo will be covered in snow.... and we were not disappointed! Snowballs were flying and many snowmen dotted the roadside all the way up to the highest point. It is amazing how snow brings out the smiles in us all... not only the kids have a great time, but so do the adults who seem to revert back to their youth instantly!
