by Ronel Preston 11/12/2009 It's not often that one comes across a "Friendly Roadblock"!
The motorists who entered Montagu from the Ashton entrance into Long Street on Friday, 11th December (the start of the Western Cape school holiday), were clearly surprised when they were flagged down by members of the SA Police and the Montagu Community Police Forum, wearing Christmas hats and offering cooldrinks to the drivers and passengers of each vehicle! Certainly a far cry from the usual "officious" approach at such exercises.
The main purpose, says Terry McCulloch (Chairman of the Police Forum), was to request motorists to drive safely and to take extra care on our roads at this time of the year as it is notorious for the high volume of traffic accidents, so many of them fatal.
Before sending the drivers on their way again, some promotional material on Montagu and the activities of the Police Forum was also handed out.
What a warm and generous gesture - you did us proud!
