by Martin van Zyl 02/11/2009 The Eco Club and the Montagu community can be proud of the Bird Hide that was officially opened on Friday, 30th October.
Heinie Heydenrych, previous chairman of the Eco Club who initiated the project, performed the official task of cutting the ribbon and declaring the hide open. Heinie and his wife Karen travelled all the way from Tswane to share in the special moment.
It is impossible to produce figures for the number of visitors to the Hide so far, but the reaction to date has been unbelievably favourable. The compliments, especially from overseas visitors who have expressed their delight at being able to observe the bird life from a 'new type' of Bird Hide (meaning one that is not boxed in as is the case normally, plus one that is situated right in the middle of town - which is also unique) are flowing in!
Even our local school learners have expressed their appreciation that they no longer have to stand in the street or on the dirty pavement to gaze at the creatures and perhaps take photographs.
