Breede River Hospice has recently been awarded 5 star status by the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa (HPCA). This is in line with the standards set out by COHSASA (Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa) for palliative care.

HPCA member organizations have recognized the value of following an accreditation process to establish the credibility of their services which assists in accessing funding. This system allows member organizations to choose the development level appropriate for them.

This star rating system is in line with HPCA Development Strategy to promote access to palliative care. It reflects the assessment continuum which starts with the initial assessment of a new site and may culminate in full accreditation by COHSASA. It provides recognition along the continuum and takes into account that some organizations may not reach Phase 5.

Only 20 of the 202 hospices in South Africa have been awarded 5 star status.

The CEO of HPCA, dr. Liz Gwyther, met with the Queen of England earlier this year at the UK Hospice Silver Jubilee. This is proof of the high regard and appreciation that the work of hospices receives, also on international level.
This was recognition received by Hospice Breederiver at the highest international level in recognition and appreciation of the work done by the Hospice associations.
