Cape Consort Concert
Saturday, 23 April 2016Next concert of the Montagu Music Society features the Cape Consort on Saturday, 23 April at 6.30pm in the Montagu Museum, Long Street.
The Cape Consort is a Cape Town based ensemble dedicated to stylish and historically informed performances of Early Music, co-founded and directed by the composer and Baroque cellist Hans Huyssen. Since its inception in 2011 the group has given more than 70 concerts with close on 30 different programmes, exploring and presenting rarely performed Baroque and Renaissance repertoire.
Around the turn into the 17th century England experienced a flowering of madrigal compositions, started off by imitating this most fashionable Italian genre at the time. During a very brief period of roughly four decades a group of hardly more than 20 composers, many of them amateurs, produced a body of work that so concisely captures the spirit and quirks of English culture that it continues to charm audiences to this day. Join us for a glass of wine afterwards.
