16/02/2010 Father and son, Vic and Raymond Andrews will be exhibiting together at the Montagu Museum Gallery in Kohler Street for ten days in February, starting Saturday 6th at 11am
Vic and Raymond are both well-known internationally for their art. Vic has made a name for himself not only for his landscapes, but particularly for his outstanding wild life paintings and pastels.
If Vic's work is seen as 'traditional' in approach, then Raymond's must be for brilliant invention - a colourful world of his own creation, stimulated by fact and fable from far corners of the globe.
Vic has led a particularly varied and fascinating life. Copywriter, cartoonist and commercial artist, he travelled and painted throughout the wilder regions of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa. He is, you might say, a man in love with the wild life of Africa, a man so concerned for its protection that he has donated many of his finest works to wildlife organisations. He and his wife Dulcie left Gauteng to settle in Montagu in 1995.
Raymond was born in East London in 1948 where he was educated and studied art. A list of his exhibitions in South Africa could be a Who's Who of the countried best galleries. He favours painting on his own carved or etched wood, sometimes embellished with pigments, gold or other metallic foils. Seen in the photo below, is one of his works, Dreaming, which is also on show at the exhibition.
Raymond's work lives at many exulted addresses: the Parliament Buildings in Cape Town and Tswane, the Mercedes collection, the Mayor's office in Sandton and the German Embassy in Pretoria, to name a few.
This is an exhibition not to be missed! Montagu can be proud that these two artists live and work in its community.
