Master builder of Montagu | [back] |
By Deryl Barlow-Weilbach 20/08/2010 In 2007 I purchased a smallholding in Long Street Montagu. I have always dreamt of retiring to a Cape Dutch House in a small Cape village since I went to Wynberg Girls' High School in the 1980s. However, work opportunities dictated that for most of my adult life I should live and work in Transvaal (now Gauteng, fondly referred to as Gangsters' Paradise).
I had to scrape money together but even so could only afford to buy two erven of the smallholding, which was subdivided into three, having a historical cottage on the front erf. In 2008 I hired the services of a professional architect to design my dream house at great cost, but neither the design nor the prices quoted to me by builders suited my tastes or my pocket.
I was in despair. Having had to get the tenant of the cottage evicted using the PIE Act (which took 6 months of great distress), after meeting the overpriced architect on site, I was about to give up my holiday, put the land back onto the market and give up on my "unaffordable and hassle filled" dream. Then I met Attie. I chatted to him about what I wanted. No problem, he took me on an instant field trip to show me a Cape Dutch cottage that he had recently constructed for a guest house in town.
It was just what I wanted. With the aid of a local draughtsman, the plans were modified and hey presto!!! The house was built in 2009. Attie has been the greatest mentor for a building project, my advisor on all things Montagu as well as a friend. He will soon start building my sister's cottage on the other erf. The house is to be named "Domaine les Levriers" as I am owned by 5 greyhounds and 2 whippets.
We will be relocating early in 2011. In this case, local has really been Lekker!!!
