For wine lovers, there are over 45 wine cellars to visit in our valley and we are blessed and proud to say without prejudice, that many of the best wines in the country are produced right here! Architecture Steeped In History A stroll through the village will introduce you to its fascinating architecture and historic buildings - there are 14 National Monuments in Long Street alone. The Museum showcases local history and a medicinal herb garden, and there is a profusion of local flora and bird life in the Nature Garden. Daytime Activities There are really picturesque river boat cruises on the Breede River such as The River Goose and Viljoensdrift. You could even go on the new and fast growing Route 62 Wine Tours. Collecting you from your accommodation establishment, they take you to carefully selected wine cellars for a unique wine tasting experience. This means you do not have to drink and drive, so why not indulge a little? Scenic Walks And Outdoor Activities There are many scenic walks, nature trails and mountain hikes in and around Montagu. The Leiwater Dam in the heart of the town abounds with bird life - 18 species use it as a breeding ground and at least 52 visiting species have been catalogued.
For the more energetic, Montagu is a rock climber's paradise and offers some of the best rock climbing in South Africa - for beginners to the most challenging of climbs, all in or close to the town itself. Montagu also offers a 9-hole golf course, tennis, squash, bowls, horse riding, paint ball, and challenging trails for mountain bikers, quad bikers and 4 x 4 enthusiasts.
